Dine Nipomo: Adelina’s Bistro is best described as ‘casual elegance’
By Clyde and Teresa Cruise/Contributors

Dine Nipomo visited the Woodlands only last month and we are back again just a few doors down to visit Adelina’s Bistro & Market Place.

Adelina’s is located in the Monarch Club just west of the Golf Clubhouse and the Trilogy tour center. When entering the Club one feels whisked away to the inside of an upscale resort lodge with a decor defined by creative uses of wood, glass, and stone.

Adelina’s is the focal point of that atmosphere which includes a high ceiling accented with a floor to ceiling fireplace, beautiful tall hutches full of glass treasures, and a wonderfully large window looking out at an equally great view of the Golf Course.

Jack Von Schlichting, restaurant manager, and Executive Chef Pandee Pearson have put their mark on Adelina’s food and service and created what we describe as a “casual elegance.” This dynamic duo has collaborated together in the past at various venues, including a stint with Wolfgang Puck, and has appeared with the likes of Rachel Ray and Bobby Flay (for those of you who are lovers of the Food Network). They believe in healthy “California Fresh” cooking using ingredients raised locally whenever possible and going light on sauces and fried food. Von Schlichting even harvests his own tomatoes and supplies eggs from his own chickens for use in Pearson’s kitchen.

Let’s look at the “casual elegance” of lunch at Adelina’s. Salads range from a Caesar to an Asian grilled chicken, to a chopped turkey salad with avocado, tomatoes, scallions, provolone cheese, whole egg, red onion and blue cheese crumbles.

Brick oven pizzas are a staple of both lunch and dinner. Teresa tried the asparagus and goat cheese pizza. She felt the combination of those items flavored with shaved lemon, fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and fresh tarragon definitely produced a pizza to write home about.

Lunch also includes a sandwich selection as intriguing as the pizzas, including a roasted turkey sandwich filled with provolone, avocado, lettuce, and sprouts and a prosciutto ham and chicken Panini made with avocado, tomato, arugula and blue cheese. Clyde ordered a turkey Panini and in it, with the turkey, was a combination of fontina cheese, avocado, bacon and tomato that combined with the sour dough bread to create a taste that defines “Panini. We have to mention at this point that the pulled pork sandwich on the Adelina’s lunch menu is so tasty that it was featured in a Wall Street Journal article last year.

When we return to Adelina’s (which will be soon), it will be for dinner. Grilled pork loin, roasted chicken, pan-seared duck and New York steak are all on a menu that changes seasonally and so are an array of those brick oven pizzas. However, we are fish lovers and Chef Pearson is noted for her fish expertise so we will be trying the grilled ahi tuna, the sweet Florida prawns, the Alaska sockeye salmon or maybe the Morro Bay black cod prepared with ale batter.

Sunday brunch doesn’t leave out the brick oven pizzas, but adds a myriad breakfast items such as chicken, chorizo and vegetarian burritos; Italian sausage and mushroom omelets; traditional eggs benedict; grilled asparagus with poached egg; and our no doubt favorite, a house special brioche French toast served with fresh berries and whipped cream.

Our next visit to Adelina’s will be on Saturday when The Monarch Club and Monarch Dunes Golf will host the Nipomo Summer Jamboree presented by the Nipomo Recreation Assn. Hope to see you at the Summer Jamboree and enjoying the “casual elegance” that is Adelina’s Bistro.
